Located in the beautiful Sierra Nevada foothills near the scenic South Yuba River and Tahoe National Forest, Camp Woolman is a summer camp that embodies values of community, creativity, stewardship, exploration, and simple fun. Kids come to learn, play, make friends, and live in an accepting community where they can truly be themselves. Woolman strives to be a place where everyone experiences radical acceptance for who they are, is treated with dignity and respect, and is surrounded by the physically, mentally, and spiritually healing power of nature.

In-camp days include songs and silent reflection, lots of games, some community chores, choice activities, workshops, relaxation time, and lots of playing. Our activities include arts and crafts, nature connection, wilderness skills, swimming, farm education, sports, and games. Each camp session is accented by our signature wilderness backpacking trips and either an art & farm focus or a river rafting trip (new this summer!)

Woolman is a non-religious organization that draws inspiration from its Quaker roots. We look to the Quaker values of integrity, equity, simplicity, community, stewardship of the Earth, and peace as pillars for creating a safe and open community. Camp Woolman is a place of acceptance, where staff and campers are welcome regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.

Wombat Camp (age 9-13)

Where else can you join a band of superheroes, perform a song about purple lasagna (and get a standing ovation), tie-dye your socks, make new friends, play with clay, learn about bugs, and jump in a beautiful river… all in the same day?

Days at camp are full of fun, laughter, friends, food, and choices. We do lots of things together – eating meals, playing all-camp games, singing, going to Mel’s Pond. There’s also times when you get to decide what you want to do – which activity you want to sign up for, which game you want to play, or what you want to do during free time.

Other special events we do at camp include Variety Show Night, dance parties, Jugs (Capture the Flag with some Woolman twists), and BBQs. It doesn’t matter who you are at school or where you are from, at camp the only person you have to impress is yourself!

Teen Leadership Camp (age 14-17)

Teen Leadership Camp sessions offer 14 – 17 year olds the chance to enjoy all that Camp Woolman has to offer, art and farm activities, sports, games, swimming and fun. TLC campers also practice leadership skills, designing and leading activities for younger campers and being stewards at camp and on trips.

Teens go on separate wilderness trips and practice skills vital to becoming independent backpackers and trip leaders – all while forming a truly unique and unforgettable community. Teens will learn important trail skills from their counselors, including trail cooking, topo map reading, orienteering, and trip planning.

Summer after summer TLC campers become independent and confident outdoor adventurers, creative stewards, and empathetic and engaged community members. They shine their brightest in the company of strong friendships, stunning mountain views, and life-long memories.

Wilderness Backpacking Trips

Every Wombat Camp and TLC session features a wilderness backpacking trip. These fun day trips & 3-day / 2-night adventures are led by our experienced staff. Campers often say it was the highlight of their time at camp. Your counselors will lead you in hiking, swimming, camping, making art, learning about nature, and becoming great friends. These trips are wonderful for people who are new to backpacking as well as seasoned hikers. Campers go to destinations such as the famous Pacific Crest Trail, The South Yuba River, Grouse Ridge, Desolation Wilderness, and the amazing Sierra Buttes. Experience sleeping under the stars, hiking through beautiful places, backcountry cooking, and learning about the ecosystems and history of our surrounding wilderness.

River Rafting Trips

A new feature in 2023, one Wombat Camp session and one TLC session will enjoy a 2-day river rafting trip on the American River, led by a local river outfitter. These sessions are great for campers interested in pushing their boundaries, exploring the outdoors and seeing all the beauty that the Sierra Foothills has to offer!

Arts & Farm Focus

All Wombat and TLC sessions will get to experience our onsite organic farm and enjoy art activities, but several sessions will dive deeper into these areas, offering focused workshops and project time. Campers can enjoy the Woolman pottery studio, nature drawing, fabric arts, painting, building and much more!

Family Camp

The first week of July features a special session designed for families to enjoy a camp experience together! Groups can expect swimming, arts, games, special themed activities led by Camp Staff, delicious meals, and optional day trips to surrounding natural areas including hiking and swimming in the beautiful Yuba River.
